Lecturer Profile: Roy Ringham - Accounting and Finance Lecturer

Roy joined us in 2012 with a passion to enhance our students’ learning experience by blending his industry experience; having developed, enhanced and implemented management and financial accounting systems among many other projects, his academic knowledge; holding a BSc in Maths and as a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA), and teaching background; having taught internationally (in Nigeria) and domestically covering an array of subjects from Maths, Physics and Accounting to Scuba diving.

Roy is keenly interested in consolidating effective teaching and learning, in order to enhance student experiences and achievement and continuously develops our Accounting and Finance degree to reflect industry and professional advancements. Alongside working with us at GSM London, Roy volunteers over 70 hours a month to teaching in a voluntary educational programme.

What is your academic background (qualifications etc)?
BSc (Hons) Mathematics; Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA).

How long have you been working here?
Since February 2012.

What attracted you about working here?
The opportunity to enhance students’ learning experience by blending industry and professional practices with academic studies.

What were you doing before you decided to teach at GSM London?
Managing the business users’ acceptance testing, as part of the overall project management of business and financial front and back office computer systems.

Do you enjoy being here?
Yes. Supporting students in recognising and developing their potential is very rewarding.

Tell us something unique about you (something quirky).
I spend over 70 hours a month teaching in a voluntary educational programme.

What subject are you currently teaching?
Accounting and Finance Programme – Advanced Management Accounting and Performance Management; Financial Management.

Tell us about your experience in the field you teach and any interesting projects you have worked on.
As a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA), I have worked on the development, enhancement and implementation of management and financial accounting systems, customer relationship management projects, and the auditing of companies due to be taken over. In particular, the implementation of a budgetary control process proved somewhat challenging, due to the management of change strategy adopted.

Do you have any other experience in any other field?
Selected to do VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) in Nigeria – teaching maths and physics ‘O’ levels in a government secondary school.
Private tutor for ‘O’ and ‘A’ level maths.
BSAC scuba diving club instructor.

 

How does your works experience, incorporated with your academic experience help support your students? (Do students get involved with anything?) (Is your course content up-to-date with industry advancements?)
I am keenly interested in consolidating effective teaching and learning, in order to enhance student experiences and achievement. This involves the leadership of the Accounting and Finance programmes and modules, continuous development of the curriculum to reflect industry and professional changes, and mentoring teaching staff to become more effective educators.
I will continue the development of sound working practices and relationships with other GSM academic faculties and operational departments, in order to incorporate the sharing of current industry and professional advancements with students, as part of the lessons.
I will work to expand and enhance the current student employability initiatives in partnership with the employability consultants, in order to forge closer links with companies and accountancy bodies.
